Sun, 26 May 2019 17:34:38 +0000http://sterlingwittmuseum.com/blog/2019/05/26/npr-art-music-pain Recently I was featured on NPR Monday Morning Edition. The interview / article is about the fact that I live with chronic back pain from a severe case of idiopathic scoliosis that I have dealt with since I was 15 years old. This subject is not one I tend to share. Up until now I've chosen to keep this information out of the public eye. I've made a point to avoid the topic in interviews in the past. I also have done my best to avoid the topic in conversations with friends and family. The reason is there is nothing particularly positive, or uplifting about it. I didn't want to burden anyone by sharing the dark side of my life with them. Instead I hid it in my art and music. That way if the viewer / listener chose to dig into the back story it was their choice because of their interest in the art and music.
In a way living with chronic pain is my secret weapon. When I make art and music the pain greatly diminishes and sometimes it's almost like being pain free. So naturally I end up with lots of art and music. I wish it was from something else, something more palatable and attractive.
Situations like this is why people say "Truth is Stranger than Fiction". I would have to agree. Jon Hamilton at NPR contacted me a couple weeks ago to do the interview and I almost didn't do it. Simply because the focus was my chronic back pain. For such a long time I've tried to keep this a secret and I wasn't sure I was done keeping that secret. So I thought about it for a while and a little voice inside me said "do it" so I did.
This painting "Self Portrait Green Shirt" was specifically requested for the article. A rather disturbing image I painted what seems like a lifetime ago in 2001. It's odd to be this far away from the time of it's creation and yet it's the piece chosen to represent my art. It was equally strange hearing a snippet of a song I released in 2004 titled "Pain" (album "Self Portrait") being played on the radio. It's the last song anyone would imagine being played on the radio. However it does fit the topic of the show. Listen to the interview and read the article, click HERE. It's a little bit of my back story, literally~ Sterling

Ever wondered why an opera singer can shatter a glass simply by singing the right note? How is this possible? The glass shatters because the opera singer sings a note that is close to the natural frequency of the glass, amplifying its natural frequency. That's all it takes. Crash bang the glass is history.
Think about this: Everything has a natural frequency. Even you & I have natural frequencies. These days, many of the frequencies around us are anything but natural (Wi-Fi, cell phones, televisions, appliances, etc.). Every day we are swimming in a sea of electromagnetic radiation. Ever wonder about the frequency of your cell phone or laptop computer? Are those frequencies good or bad for you? One thing is for sure, it wasn't long ago that these devices didn't even exist. Now they are a part of our daily lives.
What about your music? All musical instruments are tuned to a frequency. Is it possible that the frequency could be harmful? Yes, it is possible. It is also possible for the frequency to be healthy and good for you. How do you know? You don't, that's the problem.
In 1926 there was a big change in music. That year the international standard tuning was changed to 440 HZ. Before that it was a free for all. Different cultures tuned to different frequencies. However most of the ancient cultures tuned to 432 HZ. How did they change it to 440 HZ? They made all tuners calibrated to 440 HZ. Go get a tuner and have a look for yourself. When your guitar is in tune, it is in tune at 440 HZ. That is true for almost every instrument. What difference does it make? What if 440 HZ is harmful to the human body?
"If one should desire to know whether a kingdom is well governed, if its morals are good or bad, the quality of its music will furnish the answer. -Confucius
What is that supposed to mean? I suggest Confucius was referring to the frequency of the music. For example: For thousands of years during the Chinese Dynasties the emperors would send out teams of musical experts all over the kingdom to make sure the people were playing music in the right frequency. They had very strict guidelines. The frequency they tuned to was 432 HZ.
432 HZ was considered the natural frequency by ancients and was used for thousands of years. So why did we stop? That is a good question.
One thing you ought to know is that the new album, Satyagraha, is tuned to 432 HZ.
Satyagraha,
